Charlotte has plenty of resources to fund city operations within the current $1.854B budget (FY2010). There is no need to raise property taxes to pay for new and recurring budget items.
Among the five largest metro areas in North Carolina, Charlotte ranks fourth out of five in city tax rates behind Greensboro ($0.635), Durham ($0.54), and Winston-Salem ($0.4675). Only Raleigh has a lower tax rate at ($0.3817). Charlotte’s tax rate is ($0.4586).
As a Conservative, I recognize we must keep our taxes low if we are going to remain competitive to retain and attract new employers to Charlotte.
Since 2005 from the minority on Council, I have fought hard to give priority funding to “core” city services while keeping the LIBERAL Democrats from raising our property taxes to pay for “non-core” city budget items.
I define “core” city services as police, fire, roads, water, and sewer. The city of Charlotte should not be in the business of funding non-profits at the expense of: protecting its citizens and property, delivering water and sewer services, and building and maintaining its system of roads. Responsible leadership requires we make priorities in budgeting and spending. I remain committed to doing just that!
I am especially proud of my last two years as Budget Committee Chairman! Since 2007, I led the delivery of a City budget that kept property taxes level, with NO increase in tax rates.
I pledge to you I will continue to do the same during my third term.
